Google Chrome Beta

September 3rd, 2008 anna Posted in Tech Break | No Comments »

There’s a new browser in town. And based on initial reviews, it looks like it can douse the fire out of Firefox. So, as soon as I read the good reviews, I figured might as well try out the new browser. I downloaded it from http://www.google.com/chrome

Note that Chrome for now is only available for Windows XP and VIsta.

I’m all excited to try it out but the installation kept crashing. Darn it! FYI, I’m using Windows XP Pro SP3. Now, after several tries, I’m giving up. I’m gonna wait for a later release.

Might be a good thing too, because there’s been a report that there is a security flaw in Google Chrome that can “trick users into launching executables direct from the new browser” You can read it here. Not sure whether this is true or not, but flaws are bound to exist in any new release.

If you already have Chrome installed,  it would be a good idea to limit it to your browsing and searching. Better to perform anything sensitive like banking on Firefox for now.

ZapGrab: The Cropped Print Screen Utility

July 21st, 2008 anna Posted in Pretty Useful Stuff, Tech Break | No Comments »

I’ve been using ZapGrab for years every since I first discovered it in 2004. Makes your life a whole lot easier when you had to make a user manual with screen shots.

Plus points;

1- You don’t have to use “Print Screen” which copies the whole of your screen, and edit it later using some picture editing software (like Paint in Windows) to crop it down to the part you want.

2 - Small, 30 kb zipped file. Small enough to attach in an email or carry in your thumb drive

3 - No installation required. Just run from the zipped file. Voila!

4- And best of all, its freeware.

Checkout the howto here.

The catch, only works for Windows.

Anyone know of any similar programs for Linux?

A world without Windows

July 21st, 2008 anna Posted in Tech Break | No Comments »

After years of being stuck with using Windows Operating Systems 3.1, 95, 98, 2000, XP, (my former company, former schools…etc was Pro-Microsoft), I finally got a machine of my own to install Linux. (Well, technically the laptop is a loaner from my sister. Thanks sis. ) After weeks of backing up and reorganizing my Windows documents, I finally got Linux installed last week.

Now, what prompted me to use Linux?

1. I don’t like being dependent on proprietary software/programs. Money wise.

2. Windows tend to hang… a lot!

3. There’s lots of (Linux) distributions to choose from. Freedom of choice.

4. I can’t called myself a geek without using Linux. Duh!

5. Its about time for people to start moving on from Windows and Bill Gates…and to Linux and Open Source

6. Well, why not? Its as good as or even better than Windows.

7. You can easily download the installation CD/DVD. No shopping at Low Yatt required

8. Lots of viruses aimed for Windows

Hm…the list goes on and on

Now, after almost 2 weeks of using Ubuntu Linux, I definitely recommend you to use it, and ditch Windows out the window! <evil laugh!>

Ubuntu Logo

Why I choose Ubuntu over other Linux Operating Systems? If you’re a newbie, you might want to start of with Ubuntu first which is one of the most popular (and simple) Linux distributions. Transition from Windows is almost seamless. Only a single installation CD is needed, unlike a DVD for Fedora Linux. If you’re unsure of making the plunge, you can try to use it on your machine using LiveCD first, without any installation required. Cool eh!
